Lacoste: Unique history on the well-known label and its even better known Logo began in 1923 in Boston. René Lacoste played in the Davis Cup for the French team and made a bet with his team captain. For a victory of importance he was to be given a valuable suit-case made of alligator skin. Inspired by the persistent doggedness with which Lacoste fought for victory, an American journalist remembered this bet and wrote: "He did not win the suit-case of alligator skin, but he fought like a genuine alligator." Back in France, the "alligator" became a "crocodile" and thus a legend and a world-famous Logo. Robert Georges, a good friend and sportsman, drew the remarkable crocodile with the huge mouth in 1927, which René Lacoste wore from then in tournaments and stitched on his blazer. Shortly later, René Lacoste decided to design a new shirt in which, thanks to the greater freedom of movement tennis could be played better and which was ideally suitable due to the light material used, for the heat of the American summer. The legendary original polo shirt revolutionised men's and later women's sportswear and replaced the long-sleeve, classically woven and starched shirts on the tennis courts.
